The 500 isn’t all good looks and no action. Under the bonnet there are four sparkling performers to choose from: new TwinAir – with plenty of zip, but up to 15% less emissions – the 1.2 or 1.4 petrol, or the 1.3 MultiJet diesel.

Easy rider:
We’ve learnt a lot from the 500’s siblings. The suspension has been tweaked, modified and improved for the 500 for sharp handling and a super-smooth ride.

Sporty by nature:

It may measure just 355cm long, but the 500 performed like a giant in the safety tests, scoring an impressive five Euro NCAP stars. In fact, its front end is designed specifically to improve safety in a head-on collision.

All-round protection:
The 500 is not your average small car. It comes with no less than seven airbags, so you’re protected from every angle (there’s even one for your knees).

Safety controls:
We’ve packed the 500 with the very latest technology to keep you and your passengers safe. In fact, it offers more safety features as standard than any other small car. A clever bit of technical wizardry called ESP (Electronic Safety Programme) keeps you in control if road conditions mean your tyres lose their grip. It’s available on all models.

Stay Secure:
The front seatbelts have pretensioners to take away any slack in the first few milliseconds of an impact, and the load limiters jump into action when there’s a large restraining force on the belt. They release a little bit of the belt to prevent you being injured by it.

Smoothly does it:
Developed for prompt, smooth braking with shorter stopping distances, the 500’s brake system uses the latest technology. The anti-lock brakes with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) spread the braking force evenly across all four wheels, so you stay in control even in an emergency.

Retro split-colour seats – just like the original 500 – in all versions except the TwinAir, which boasts exclusive all-black sports seats. In the Lounge version the seats are in super-slick, super-durable Cordura fabric. Or treat yourself to the luxury Frau leather option in black, brown or red.

Love leather:
For a slick, sporty look in your 500 go for the leather interior. And we’re not just talking about the seats. You can choose a leather steering wheel and gear stick – standard with the TwinAir Plus trim – and leather on the doors. Choose from black, brown or red.

The 500’s stereo plays CDs and MP3 files, or there’s always the radio of course. Six speakers (2 x 30W tweeters, 2 x 40W and 2 x 35W full-range) come as standard too. Or choose the sophisticated Interscope Sound System – a hi-fi designed and developed to give the best sound in the 500’s cabin – and you’ll not want to get out. In addition to its special signal processing technology, it comes with six speakers (two tweeters, two woofers and two full-range, all 40W), plus a 100W sub-woofer and 30W amplifier. Turn it up.

BOOT SPACE

Split personality:
The 500 is happy to be put to work. Not only does it love running you around town, but when it comes to loading it up, the 500 becomes a serious work horse. Go for the split, folding rear seat option for flexible luggage/shopping/pushchair/football kit room.

Load it up:
The 500’s boot is nice and low at the back, so loading in all that shopping is easy. A healthy 185 litres of storage space can be boosted quickly by folding the rear seats down to give a super-mini busting 500 litres.

Smart storage:
Despite its petite proportions, the 500 is surprisingly roomy inside, and its storage solutions are ingenious. In the front, there’s a nifty compartment in the base of the passenger seat and neat drawers in the dash so you can hide your valuables. In the back, you can add a storage unit or an organiser to the boot to keep things tidy, or add the luggage rack to the rear window.
