Fiat Bravo 150 Sport - Engine Power Problem

    Hi,

    Bravo 150 MJET (2008)

Whilst driving home the other night my car lacked real power.  In first gear it would only just pull up a small incline, the engine really laboured in revs.  Afterwards (trying to slip the clutch to build up some power) >3500rpm it seemd ok.  Another instant travelling at 50mph, in 6th, I tried to increase speed to 70mph, but it wasn't having any of it.  I had to drop it down to 4th gear to get it to pick on revs and increase speed.  Its basically un driveable.

This sounds like something electronic? I had a look in the engine bay, and from what I could see (which isn't much) there were no leaks or apparent breakages, the oils ok and the engine sounds its usual self.

Up till now I had been recommending this car because you get a lot for your money, but with the dealers stating they can't look at it for 3wks, I'm kind of worried and dissapointed. :-(

    Can anyone think whats wrong?

    hi matt

generally if you don't have an warning light .it won't be electronic related....and may possible be a mechanical fault ....unfortunately with todays systems ,you may have a fault ,but with all the sensors fitted, they compensate...ie a blocked air filter ,a sensor monitors the air intake and adjusts the fueling to suit ...where as in pre ecu days you would have plums of black smoke from the exhaust....obviously not being able to experience what the car is doing ...i would check the air filter and egr valve to start with ...though  if still under warranty ,it's a dealer job ...i can understand your concerns ...but surely all the fiat dealers acn't be that busy that they are quoting 3 weeks  ,just to look at it .....being in the trade on the truck side (dealership) i really do not rate any car dealership ....customer  service is terrible....they just want to do the simple things (easy money)  give them a real problem and they are useless....the only suggestion i can give is ,if the car dealer can't fit you in ...try a fiat professional dealer ,that;s the van side of fiat ,,try and find one that also deals in trucks as they are generally open 24/7 ,will have a better  understanding of diesel engines  and generally if you drive in , though you may have to wait an hour or two ,will put the laptop on ,even if just to see if there are any stored /pending errors ...if they see a quick fix they generally do it there and then ..or if a longer fix will book it in and order the part there and then.....if you say where you are from i'll see if i can find a professional dealer  for you ...technically  i have heard professional dealers aren't meant to touch cars ,but not sure if that is true

Thanks Phil, It still is under warranty and I had wondered if it was the EGR valve, all the symptoms seem to lead to this - something that I had never heard of before investigating my engine problem. Also what I didn't mention (which is also in the back of my mind) is that the car is due its 36k service in what would of been the next few weeks. So probably try and get that done at the same time.

As for the dealerships I suppose its down to my geographical area (Bradford) where there is only one really local dealership, the others don't do warranty work anymore.

For now I'm driving around in a 58Reg Skoda Fabia Estate 1.9tdie (Work pool car) - which is making me really appreciate the Fiat and its Quirks!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Cheers

Hi there I have an 08/08 1.4 120 T-Jet with the same problem ver bloody annoying it is too.  Did you manage to get yours fixed under the 3rd year dealer warranty or was it done under the 2 year manfac warranty?
If I don't see you through week I'll see you through window!!!

I realised that straight after I'd posted it.  It was the break pedal switch that was faulty, ECU thought I was driving round with brakes on all the time.  Thanks for your reply any way.....

good you got it fixed ...out of interest ,did you have any warning ,or was it just a lack of power??? on the make of truck i  work on you get an engine warning in such circumstances ,as the ecu's get confused if it sees a throttle pedal and a brake pedal signal at the same time  when your moving ,as  far as they are concerned you wouldn't accelerate and brake at the same time ,hence the warning

Re: Fiat Bravo 150 Sport - Engine Power Problem
If itwas brake switch fault you would get switch open/short circuit fault, if it was throttle/brake it would read brake feasibility and yes it will log an error and bring engine light on until it didn't see the fault again (present to intermittent)
