All for the sake of a £15 Bush

The last Seven cars I have owned have been Fiats, Three Puntos, a Cinqecento, a Bravo, and Two Stilo's.

I only actually bought one Stilo, however after two months the car was replaced due to continuous gremlins. MOT time has arrived for the car so i've duly presented the car to my local garage who have informed me that a £15 Bush in the rear subframe needs replacing, but it is a special order part from Fiat and the tooling to get it out and back in again is special Fiat and they don't have one.

So I tried to get the car into the dealer I bought it from. The same dealer I bought my last Four Fiat cars from (all new) They tried to put me off for a couple of days but after a 'discussion' managed to get it in the following day for evaluation.

Up on the ramps the damaged bush was easy to spot, firstly they tried to sell me a complete rear subframe (over £700 for the part alone), after I pointed out that the new subframe didn't come with bushes they agreed that replacing the bushes was the better option.

The Service engineer then pointed out that despite being the dealer I bought the car from they didn't actually have the necessary tools to do the job. They did however have the service time that they would quote if they did have the tool and were willing to have a go.

Just short of £600 to replace two £15 Bushes, and slot in two new rear coils £30 each whilst the suspension was off the car, as one was already broken and the other would no doubt follow.

After a sharp intake of breath I politely said no and turned to leave, the Service manager seemed confused that I wasn't going to have them do the work, and I pointed out that the car wasn't worth that much so it was a no brainer.

His response was that if I decided to get rid of the car then he had plenty more on the forecourt. After Seven Fiats in a row, and staunchly standing up for Fiat despite the mochery that surrounds the marque I have finally had enough.

The first Stilo had Mechanical Electrical and Bodywork problems from new, the replacement had the front suspension collapse at 18 Months old denting the sill down one side, had the front strut bearing collapse shortly after, had both front springs break, and is finally beaten me into submission with a £15 Bush.

And as for the caring Customer Service team - they couldn't be less bothered if they tried.
