The 500 is causing a bit of a stir all over the country. This is where we’ll keep you posted with news of all the latest happenings and events.
Hundreds of people visited the British Airways London Eye between 24 January and 3 February to configure their own unique Fiat 500 in our special design competition. Top prize was the chance to win the designed car, and five runner-up prizes of a Champagne trip in one of the Eye’s flight capsules were also up for grabs.
Judging the competition proved a difficult task, but the winners have now been announced by London’s Design Museum.
Donna Loveday – head of exhibitions at the Design Museum – selected the winning artists’ stunning designs, which are shown below along with her expert opinion on each of the entries.
Congratulations to the six winners!
And don’t forget you too can design your dream Fiat 500 simply by visiting our unique online configurator.
The Fiat 500 winning design
Cars in a silver finish are currently very popular, but Duncan’s combination of the colour azure with the addition of a chequered flag on the roof turns this into a smart and sporty city car. A range of options are offered with consideration given to interior and exterior detail.
The Champagne Capsule winners
A near winner – green with the Italian flag stripe and black sun roof makes clear reference to Fiat’s Italian design heritage.
The colour yellow combined with a black chequered flag on the roof turns this into a bright and very funky car, for those drivers who want to opt for something a little unconventional.
A clever combination of blue with the Italian flag stripe creates a very attractive car.
The colour blue with the addition of a white stripe and the number 5 immediately gives the car strong sporting associations.
The subtle combination of black with a front stripe creates a very smart city car. A range of options are given, including automatic climate control.

Every day we use dozens of tiny objects – from Post-it notes to Band-Aids to erasers – that work so well we pay them little attention.
Although modest in size and price, some of these objects are true masterpieces of the art of design and we simply couldn’t do without them.
The Fiat 500 is definitely an Everyday Masterpiece.
And here is the TV ad that best represents our own ‘Everyday Masterpiece’.

It’s party time! We’re very excited because tonight at 8pm the Fiat 500 is going to be unveiled at a VERY glamorous event at the London Eye. So far we know that the fabulous Mika will be performing, and that there should be some pretty good surprises in store too. Everyone’s welcome, so come and get the first look at the Fiat 500. Careful what you get up to, though, because we’ll be putting up post-party pictures in the next few days. If you can’t make it to London tonight, don’t stress – there’ll be plenty of Fiat 500 festivities at dealer events, so keep your eyes peeled. Anyway, enough talking… We’d better start getting ready!

Oh yes, the first of four new Fiat 500 cars, illustrated by Tracey Emin, went under the hammer for $85,000 (£45,000) during the Contemporary Art Auction at the Phillips de Pury & Company saleroom in London. The identity of the buyer has not been released, but it is known that she comes from Switzerland.
Proceeds from the sale went to the artist’s chosen charity, PEAS, which is raising funds for a school library in Uganda. The three other 500s with Emin designs will also be offered at auction, one before the end of the year and two in 2008.
Fancy owning one yourself? Join in the next time an Emin artwork goes under the hammer!

It’s done it! After creating astonishing interest, stoking up colossal passion and becoming the motoring buzzword of the moment, the new Fiat 500 has won the big one – the European Car of the Year crown. It’s already scooped TV’s Fifth Gear Car of the Year title and been named CAR Magazine’s top motor for 2007, so the 500 is going to need a bigger trophy cabinet as it continues to bring home the silverware. This latest honour is the really important one, though, and brings the total number of Fiat Group wins in this tough competition to 12 – more than any other manufacturer. Judged by specialist journalists from 22 European countries, the award lays the foundation for a remarkable future for the super-compact. And with 385 votes, the Fiat 500 was streets ahead of its nearest rivals: the Mazda 2 (325) and Ford’s Mondeo (202). It clearly pressed the starter button for the European Car of the Year jurors – so does it get your vote?

You thought the new 500 had not yet arrived in the UK, but you have seen a Fiat 500 travelling around London... painted?! Well, you are not crazy. They are special Fiat 500s, painted by the renowned English artist Tracey Emin, who has personalised the small cute cars in an “out of the gallery and on to the street” exhibition. "I really enjoyed working on the Fiat 500, which I refer to as the ‘mouse car’. It was tempting to make them even more super-cute, but instead decided to give them an edge". And this is just the first part of the adventure... come back to the blog and we will tell you more soon!

Some cars go down in history for their technological or stylistic innovations. Others deserve to be remembered for the role they have played in the daily life of an entire generation or an entire country.Few succeed in combining the two: technology and sentiment. They leave an indelible mark, becoming a sort of icon of their age. The Nuova 500 is one of these. In a career lasting 18 years, from 1957 to 1975, exactly 3,893,294 were built, and it helped Italians and numerous other Europeans to satisfy the need for individual mobility that began to gain momentum from the early 1950s.

Anyone could re-edit the 500, because its shape is part of our collective memory. The New 500 is an appeal which reflects the strong, winning market trends but remains consistent with Fiat’s history and mission: to build cars of original styling, with advanced technology that is made accessible to everyone and intelligent solutions that simplify and improve life on board.

Designed by the Fiat Style Centre and built in the plant in Tychy (Poland), the new 500 is a compact car that appeals immediately for its soft, rounded line. And its ‘tomboyish’ looks bring a smile of complicity to drivers who have to tackle intense town traffic every day, with a lack of space and a frenetic lifestyle.
